What is CBM?
The cubic meter (CBM) is the unit consolidated ocean freight is quoted in. Multiply length × width × height of each carton (in meters) by the number of pieces.
CBM = L × W × H × pieces
Volumetric weight
In air freight your cargo doesn’t just weigh — it takes up space. Airlines bill the greater of actual and volumetric weight, which is the volume divided by 6,000 (cm³/kg).
Vol. weight = (L × W × H in cm) ÷ 6,000
FCL or LCL?
Rule of thumb: from ~15 CBM a full container (FCL) usually beats consolidated (LCL) — you pay for the box, not the volume, and your cargo travels with no intermediate handling.
≥ 15 CBM → consider FCL
